Between the private and the public domain, where can we place desire? Kaali Salwar (2002), set in Mumbai’s mill district, blurs the sharp boundaries between the private and the public through the main protagonist’s interactions with a bewildering city. The byways and alleys where she lives are filled with ambiguous encounters and inscrutable characters. In a maze of transactions and negotiations, she must carve out her own space.

The screening is followed by a discussion with Fareeda Mehta, director, and Ramu Ramanathan, playwright, moderated by Surabhi Sharma.
